Permanent Hair Reduction

We understand the self-esteem issues relating to body hair, especially facial hair in women, which can be very debilitating. Permanently reduce unwanted hair on the face and body-no more shaving, waxing, ingrown hairs or 'razor rash'. The Energist Ultra is a high end machine that has the latest technology to ensure that the least number of treatments are required to get the desired results-usually 5 to 8 treatments. Most importantly, the settings can be adjusted in small increments, so treatments are tailor-made for each and every client, making the treatments extremely safe.

If you are being quoted more than 8 treatments, the machine being used is probably of low quality and hence, low energy output, with poor results or ineffective treatments in the latter half of a treatment program. Some clients are being quoted a large amount-12 or more treatments which are totally unnecessary.

How does it work?
Permanent hair reduction is achieved through the process of selective photothermolysis, or more simply, selectively heating through absorption of light. The process of conduction transfers this heat to adjacent cells surrounding the hair. The temperature rise through the melanin in the hair is sufficient to cause surrounding cells to die, without causing damage to the surrounding skin. Best results are obtained when the hair colour is darker than skin colour, and coarse hair responds better to treatment than fine hair. Grey or white hair will not respond to light based treatment.

Only hairs in the 'anagen' or growth stage are destroyed during each treatment. Because only up to 30% of hairs are in the anagen stage at any one time, several treatments are required to get the desired results. The hairs will fall out naturally  over 7 to 14 days. Please see slide show at the bottom of this page for before and after photos.

What does the skin feel like after a treatment?
The skin may be  pink and with some slight follicular swelling in the treated area, however, this is only short term, commonly only lasting for up to 2 hours. This is considered normal, and will subside shortly after the treatment is complete. You may experience a feeling of warmth and irritation, similar to a tingling or itching sensation, which is relieved immediately with application of aloe vera gel when the treatment is complete. Some clients actually report no discomfort or warmth after the treatment is  complete.

Treating facial hair in women
Female facial hair requires special treatment as the hair is often stimulated by fluctuating hormones. This typically occurs in peri-menopause which can start as early as 30 years. When we are treating facial hair (for women) that is due to hormonal changes/disorders such as; menopause or polycystic ovarian syndrome, we are able to control the amount of hair growth. The hair will become finer, grow less vigorously, and in most cases, there will be significant reduction in hairs. Some clients will require ongoing maintenance treatments. Women who have had facial hair treated may remove the hairs by tweezing between 4 and 7 days after each treatment. Shaving or clipping can be undertaken at any time.

Do I need to grow the hair prior to a treatment?
No, the hair must be shaved or clipped quite short prior to each treatment. However, clients are asked not to tweeze or wax the hair for two weeks prior to each treatment as the hairs have to be attached to surrounding structures to be treated effectively.

What is a test patch and why do I have to have one?
A test patch is required 48 hours prior to the first treatment-it is mandated by insurance companies that provide cover for laser clinics. This is to screen for clients who's skin is prone to hyper/hypopigmentation. It generally occurs in darker skinned individuals, however, as mentioned above, insurance companies will not cover clinics unless this is undertaken on each and every client at least 48hrs prior to the first treatment. This is usually performed at the initial consultation, costs $54 and is redeemed off the first treatment.

Is there anything I need to do or avoid  prior to each treatment?
It is most important to avoid sun exposure and wear a high quality UVA & UVB sun block of 15+ or more before and after treatments. Again, do not tweeze or wax the hair for two weeks prior to each treatment. Also, avoid artificial tanning lotions or spray tans.

Is there anything I need to do or avoid after each treatment?
It is most important to avoid sun exposure and wear a high quality UVA & UVB sun block of 15+ or more after treatments. Also avoid overheating ie. saunas, spas and vigorous sports immediately after each treatment. Peels, facial/body scrubs and loofas may irritate newly treated hair/skin, so should also be avoided. Leave the hairs in the follicles for at least 3 days after each treatment. This will help reduce any chances of an opportunistic infection in the damaged follicle.

Regular application of aloe vera gel is highly recommended after treatments. This will soothe the skin and dramatically improve recovery time. Keep the aloe vera in the fridge for added 'cooling ' effect. If the area is still uncomfortable, you can cool the area with a coldpack for 10 to 20 minutes at a time.
